The Story:

The Luna Hoops are inspired by the story of Bakunawa and the seven moons.

Long ago there were once seven moons in the sky. The great serpent, Bakunawa, coveted these seven sisters, so one night he flew up to the sky and swallowed one. Months passed and that first moon melted. Bakunawa stole another, but again it melted. He did this again and again until there was only one moon left.

As he tried to swallow the last moon, the people of earth started shouting and banging drums, startling Bakunawa and releasing the moon. But he has never given up, and now and then he tries to swallow our moon. Now every time there is an eclipse the people of earth make loud noises to frighten him away.

Artist Notes: The original design was inspired by precolonial-inspired tattoo designs of the moon and featured 5 pearls studded along the hoops. For this redesign I wanted to incorporate the legend of Bakunawa, so I put 7 pearls to represent the 7 moons in the story. I also swapped out the original silver beads for these pearly gold-lined white ones. They have a soft, shimmery effect which remind me of moonlight. Perfect for this moon-inspired pair!

Size: 30 mm hoop diameter.

Materials: Glass seed beads, freshwater pearls, beading thread, stainless steel hoops. Stainless steel findings make these safe for sensitive ears.
