Mangosteen Earrings
The Story:
The mangosteen is a tropical fruit that grows in Southeast Asia. Its unique sweet-sour flavor made it popular with European colonists, who tried to export it back to Europe. Unfortunately the fruit spoiled too fast to make the journey. Because of this, someone started a rumor that Queen Victoria would reward anyone who could bring her one unspoiled. Whether that’s true or not is up for debate, but that’s one of the reasons the mangosteen earned the title, “queen of fruits”.
The Fruits of the Philippines is a collection of popular Filipino fruits, including mango, guava, makopa, and more! Each little fruit is inspired by traditional folktales about each fruit’s origin. Read them here.
Each piece is handwoven by yours truly using tiny glass beads. It took me nearly 6 months to perfect each fruit, as I really wanted to get the proportions of our native fruits just right. This collection is a labor of love, and my way of sharing Filipino stories with the world.
